Edible Sand Sensory Bin

August 16, 2019

This edible sand sensory bin is so fun to do with toddlers and babies and 100% taste safe. When I plan activities for my boys I try to find something they can do together. I have found many taste-safe activities but this one is by far the easiest to put together.

What Is Edible Sand + How To Make It

Edible sand is usually made up of one ingredient. However, there are many different ingredients you can use. I used Cheerios for my ingredients today. You can also use crackers, other cereals, pretzels, and more. There are a few ways you can go about making the Cheerios fine enough for a sand-like texture. You can use a blender, food processor, plastic bag + something to smash it up with (let your kids do this part they love it) or even if you have a mortar and pestle is great too!

What To Put In My Sensory Bin?

I buy most of my toys and supplies for activities from Amazon, Walmart, or Dollar Tree. You can find the children’s stainless steel kitchen set as well as another kitchen set from Amazon. I had Cheerios in the pantry today so that’s why I chose that. There are many different types of sensory bin filler options and you can come up with lots of combinations to go with certain seasons or themed ones as well.

How To Get The Most Out Of This Sensory Bin

It’s always fun to watch your children dive into an activity and watch their imagination explode. You’ll see your child work with all of their senses and also their fine motor skills and transferring skills. The list below are some things you can talk about and work on with your child during this sensory bin

  1. Texture + Taste It the sand soft or hard? Does it taste sweet or salty?
  2. Fine Motor Skills Picking up the cups and dishes with their fingers
  3. Transferring + Pouring Skills Transferring and pouring the sand between dishes and utensils
  4. Social + Leadership Skills Working with another child or sibling is a great way to work on leadership and problem-solving. Any time an older child plays with a younger child they are modeling leadership and mentorship skills.
