Hickory Dickory Dock Clock

July 25, 2020

Today’s inspiration came from the nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock”. Using cardboard, some sewing thread, and a paper clip you’ll be able to make this Hickory Dickory Dock Clock at home as well!

Step One

Find a large cardboard box and cut off one of the longer sides. Find an image online of a grandfather clock and draw one on the cardboard with a pencil first. I find it easier to look up images as coloring book pages so I looked up “grandfather clock coloring page”. If you can create one without a template, more power to you! Next highlight your drawing with marker or crayon to make the image bolder. Now you have a clock!

Step Two

The next step you’ll need to create the clock hands and a way to secure it to the cardboard that’s still mobile. Using some extra cardboard, cut two arrows out and set aside. Next, take a paperclip and bend one end to a 90-degree angle (An “L” like shape). Push the long end of the paperclip through both hands of the clock and the middle of the clock. Use tape to secure the paper clip to one of the hands. Leave the other side of the paper clip free to move in the back. (You can color the hands to cover of the paper clip.)

Step 3

After you have secured the hands of the clock, now its time to get your mouse moving! Print out an image of a mouse and glue it to a piece of tough paper or cardboard. (or draw one on a piece of cardboard yourself). To get mouse mobile you will need some sewing thread and a sewing needle. Poke one hole at the top of the clock and one hole at the bottom of the clock. Next, you’ll need to thread your mouse. Take the sewing needle and thread and push through the bottom of your mouse and then back through the to secure the mouse to the string. Add a piece of tape on the back of the mouse from enabling it to move around.

Step 4

After you have you string through your mouse and the holes poked on your clock, you’ll need to attach the long string to the clock. To do this, take your sewing needle with the mouse and pull one end through the top of the clock, and the other end through the bottom of the clock where you made the holes. Flip the clock over and tie the string together so that the mouse is able to go all the way to the top and all the way to the bottom again. That’s all you need to create this simple “Hickory Dickory Dock” clock using recycled cardboard!
